Dr Nigel Sutherland is a Cardiologist and Cardiac Imaging Specialist with subspecialty expertise in the management of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. He is committed to providing high-quality, empathetic, patient-focused care, with clear and effective communication.
Dr Sutherland completed his medical studies at the University of Melbourne, graduating with MD (Distinction). He was appointed to the Dean’s Honours List for outstanding academic achievement and received numerous prizes and awards, including the Florey Ingrid Sheffer Award and the Austin Clinical School Award, presented to the top-placed student at the Austin Clinical School (University of Melbourne).
He undertook his specialist cardiology training at The Royal Melbourne Hospital, MonashHeart, and Northern Health. Following this, he completed advanced fellowship training in advanced cardiac imaging at Alfred Health, with a focus on Cardiac CT and Cardiac MRI. During this time, he participated in cutting-edge research related to cardiac CT and cardiac MRI.
Upon completion of his subspecialty training, Dr Sutherland was appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist at Northern Health and Northern Imaging Victoria, where he serves as Clinical Lead in Cardiac Imaging (CT/MRI). He is also a Visiting Medical Officer at Alfred Health, working within the quaternary Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Clinic.
Currently, he combines his clinical practice with cardiology research, particularly focused on the use of Cardiac MRI in genetic cardiomyopathies and advanced echocardiography (strain and 3D imaging). He is widely published and has presented his work both nationally and internationally, including winning the ACC 2023 / WCC Heart Tank for the Cardiovascular Investigator (CHD).
Dr Sutherland is experienced in all areas of cardiology, with particular interests in cardiovascular imaging, cardiomyopathies (including hypertrophic and familial cardiomyopathies), cardiovascular risk prediction, myocardial disease, and the cardiac care of cancer patients.
